About the school

Orthopaedic surgeons have been trained at Heidelberg University Hospital since 1963. In 2006, Heidelberg University Hospital and the Evangelische Stadtmission Heidelberg founded the Heidelberg Academy for Health Professions. Since then, the orthoptist school at Heidelberg University Hospital has been part of the Academy for Health Professions.

Today, the orthoptist school is located in the head clinic of Heidelberg University Hospital (Im Neuenheimer Feld 400). Theoretical and practical lessons as well as practical training on patients are carried out there in accordance with the legal requirements (law on the profession of orthoptist, training examination regulations for orthoptists) and the recommendations of the professional association of orthoptists. recommendations of the German Professional Association of Orthoptists.

There are two training centers for orthoptists in Baden-Württemberg: Two years in a row, new training courses with six trainees start in Heidelberg in October of each year. In the following third year, a course with six trainees begins at the University Medical Center Freiburg.

Legal framework

The training to become an orthoptist is based on the Law on the Profession of the Orthoptist (OrthoptG) and the Training and Examination Ordinance (OrthoptAPrV).

School team

The school team includes 6 full-time teaching staff, a secretary and part-time lecturers. The school directors are Birgit Wahl, MMedSci(Orthoptics) and PD Dr. med. Christina Beisse.
