Vocational school for nursing at the Heidelberg Academy for Health Professions

About the schools

Heidelberg University Hospital has been training nurses since 1887, Salem Hospital since 1970 and the Evangelical City Mission's care for the elderly since 1991. In 2006, Heidelberg University Hospital and the Evangelische Stadtmission Heidelberg founded the Heidelberg Academy for Health Professions. Since then, the schools have been part of the Academy for Health Professions. They are now located in the Heinsteinwerk in Heidelberg's Wieblingen district.

The school structures changed with the new nursing training from 2020. Since then, the vocational school for nursing at the Academy for Healthcare Professions has offered training for

  • Acute care nurse (until 2019 health and nursing care)
  • Pediatric nursing (until 2019 health and paediatric nursing)
  • Long-term care nursing specialist (until 2019 geriatric nursing)

offered. A total of 184 training places are available each year.

Theoretical training takes place at the vocational school for nursing, which is also responsible for selecting applicants and organizing and carrying out the training in accordance with legal requirements.

Training as an acute care nurse begins on April 1 and October 1 of each year. 15 training contracts are concluded with Salem Hospital and a further 85 training contracts with Heidelberg University Hospital.

Training in pediatric nursing, which leads to the title of nurse or paediatric nurse, also begins on April 1 and October 1 of each year. The training contracts are concluded with Heidelberg University Hospital.

Training as a long-term care nurse begins on October 1st of each year. The training contracts are concluded with cooperating nursing homes and outpatient care services.

Legal framework

Since 2020, training in the nursing professions has been governed by the Nursing Professions Act of 17.07.2017 and the Training and examination regulationsfor the nursing professions dated 02.10.2018. The training concludes with the professional title "Nursing specialist or health and pediatric nurse" at the end.

School team

The school's team includes 42 full-time teachers, mainly nursing educators, two doctors, four secretaries and part-time lecturers. Burkhard Götsch, Dipl. Pflegepädagoge (FH) and Beate Weisser, Dipl. Pflegepädagogin (M.A.) are the school directors of the vocational schools for nursing.
