Midwives care for women and their families from the beginning of pregnancy to the end of breastfeeding. They accompany and support women in this special phase of life, independently conduct physiological births and are responsible for the examination and care of newborns and infants. With their work, they make a significant contribution to the health care of women and their families in both medical and psychosocial areas.
The dual Bachelor's degree course in Midwifery Science prepares students for this responsible and varied work through theory modules at the HWG Ludwigshafen and practical modules at cooperating practice facilities. Heidelberg University Hospital is one such cooperating practice facility and offers 15 practical placements each year. In a network with other clinics in the area, students have the opportunity to get to know obstetrical facilities with different profiles during their studies.
The practical part of the course includes
- Assignments in the delivery room of the Heidelberg University Women's Hospital and other delivery rooms with different obstetric profiles (care of pregnant women and women in labor)
- Assignments in the mother-child area (postpartum care)
- Out-of-hospital assignments with freelance midwives in midwifery practices of midwife-led facilities/birthing centers (prenatal care, birth preparation and other courses, home postpartum care, out-of-hospital births)
- Short assignments in neonatology and gynecology
