Healthcare and nursing assistant is a nursing assistant profession. In close cooperation with three-year trained nursing staff, healthcare and nursing assistants perform nursing tasks in inpatient and outpatient healthcare facilities.
Healthcare and nursing assistants support people in need of care with daily tasks relating to personal hygiene, movement, food intake and elimination. In care situations, they accompany people who are experiencing illness, suffering or dying.
Education
The training lasts one year and concludes with a written, oral and practical examination. The theoretical training takes place in block courses and on study days and comprises at least 700 hours. At least 900 hours of practical training are completed. 18 trainees take part in the course. The teachers and practical instructors support the trainees individually as they learn.
Theoretical training
The theoretical training is structured according to interdisciplinary subject areas. We combine theoretical knowledge with practical training through practical exercises and practical assignments. In addition to nursing, we also offer scientific and medical content as well as social science topics.
Practical training
Practical training takes place on the wards of Heidelberg University Hospital and at Salem Hospital as well as with various cooperation partners in the Heidelberg area. The facilities provide practical experience in various nursing fields and medical specialties. Practical instructors and departmental teachers support the induction of trainees in the areas of work and the combination of theoretical and practical training.
Start of training, requirements, application
Training begins on March 1 and September 1 of each year.
The prerequisite for training is a secondary school leaving certificate or a school leaving certificate recognized as equivalent or higher. We also recommend completing an internship in the care sector.

If you are accepted for a training position, you will need to provide the following evidence:
- health suitability and proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox and pertussis (form will be sent with the acceptance letter)
- Police clearance certificate
