The Academy for Health Professions (AfG) is the training and further education institution of Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) and the Evangelical City Mission Heidelberg. It is one of the largest training institutions for healthcare professions in Germany. As an educational institution with an excellent reputation, the Academy for Healthcare Professions has been pursuing the mission of promoting and developing vocational training for more than 15 years.
Heidelberg University Hospital or the Evangelische Stadtmission Heidelberg conclude the training contracts and make their clinics, nursing homes and facilities available for practical training. The theoretical training takes place at the Academy for Health Professions. The Academy is responsible for the organization and implementation of the training courses.

We offer training courses on leadership and management, law, communication and language, teaching and instruction and specialist topics.
Heidelberg University Hospital is responsible for three state-recognized further training courses for the professions of healthcare and nursing, healthcare and paediatric nursing and geriatric nursing.

HIPSTA started in 2017 as the first interprofessional training ward (IPSTA) in Germany on Ward 4, a visceral surgery ward in the Department of Surgery. The new HIPSTAs look after up to 4 patients during their 4-week assignment. They carry out ward rounds independently and provide care autonomously, learning with and from each other.
