Nursing care includes preventative, curative, rehabilitative, palliative and social care measures to maintain, promote, restore or improve the physical and psychological situation of the people being cared for, their advice and support in all phases of life and the care of the dying.
The tasks of nursing also include instructing, advising and supporting other professional groups and volunteers in the respective care situations, participating in practical training in the healthcare professions, independently carrying out medically prescribed measures for medical diagnostics, therapy and rehabilitation as well as interdisciplinary cooperation with other professional groups.
The following activities are reserved for nurses and pediatric nurses:
- the assessment and determination of individual care needs
- organizing, designing and managing the care process
- analyzing, evaluating, ensuring and developing the quality of care
Education
Heidelberg University Hospital concludes the training contracts. The Academy for Health Professions carries out the theoretical training and is responsible for organizing the training. The training lasts three years. It concludes with a written, practical and oral examination.
Trainees who agree to specialize in paediatric care in their training contract with Heidelberg University Hospital have the right to choose. In the 3rd year of training, they can opt for the special training in pediatric care and complete the training with the professional title "Healthcare and Pediatric Nurse". The vocational qualification "Healthcare and pediatric nurse" qualifies you in particular for the care of infants, children and adolescents. If the right to choose is not exercised, the training concludes with the professional title "Nursing Specialist".
We ensure the quality of theoretical and practical training on the basis of the "Regulatory Agreement on Training Quality" concluded by Heidelberg University Hospital. Trainees with a general higher education entrance qualification can, parallel to their training at the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University "Interprofessional Healthcare (B.A.)" at the same time.
Theoretical training
The theoretical training takes place in block courses and comprises at least 2,100 hours. The theoretical training is based on the federal framework curriculum in accordance with the Nursing Professions Act. If the degree "Health and Pediatric Nurse" is chosen, the curriculum in the 3rd year of training is specifically geared towards this degree.
Practical training
The practical training comprises approx. 3,000 hours in 3 years of training, including the collectively agreed working hours. The majority of the practical training takes place on the wards and in the departments of the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (Children's Hospital). 12 weeks of practical training are also required in a nursing home and in an outpatient nursing service.
Practical instructors train the trainees on site in the clinics and facilities. The school supervises the trainees on site by providing regular practical support.
Start of training, requirements, application
Training begins on April 1 and October 1 of each year. Prerequisites for admission to the apprenticeship are
- Secondary school certificate or another equivalent or higher level of school education
- Secondary school certificate or equivalent school education, together with successfully completed vocational training with a planned training period of at least two years or completed training in nursing assistance or geriatric nursing assistance

If you are accepted for a training place, you must also provide the following documents:
- health suitability and proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox and pertussis (form will be sent with the acceptance letter)
- Police clearance certificate
Training agreements
Trainees conclude their training contract with the Heidelberg University Hospital for the special specialization in paediatric care.
The training allowance is (as of 01.05.2024):
- Training year: 1,517 euros
- Year of training: 1,578 euros
- Year of training: 1,674 euros
You will receive a company pension scheme, capital-forming benefits, a special annual payment (Christmas bonus) and allowances for working hours on Sundays and public holidays during your practical training. In addition:
- iPad, uniforms and work shoes
- Assumption of costs for one family trip home per month
- Job ticket or MAXX ticket for local public transport
- 30 days of vacation per year and 8 days off to prepare for final exams
- Accommodation: Rooms of varying sizes and facilities are available in staff residences in Heidelberg-Neuenheim (Neuenheimer Feld campus) and Heidelberg-Schlierbach (Orthopaedic University Hospital). In Neuenheim, rents are between € 175 and € 239/month, in Schlierbach between € 295 and € 302/month. (as of January 2024)

Legal framework
From 2020, training in the nursing professions will be governed by the Nursing Professions Act of 17.07.2017 and the Training and examination regulations for the nursing professions from 02.10.2018.
