Nursing care includes preventative, curative, rehabilitative, palliative and social care measures to maintain, promote, restore or improve the physical and psychological situation of the people being cared for, their advice and support in all phases of life and the care of the dying.The tasks of nursing also include instructing, advising and supporting other professional groups and volunteers in the respective care situations, participating in practical training in the healthcare professions, independently carrying out medically prescribed measures for medical diagnostics, therapy and rehabilitation as well as interdisciplinary cooperation with other professional groups.

Nursing specialists are responsible for the following activities:

  • the assessment and determination of individual care needs
  • organizing, designing and managing the care process
  • analyzing, evaluating, ensuring and developing the quality of care

Education

The Heidelberg University Hospital or the Salem Hospital of the Evang. Stadtmission Heidelberg conclude the training contracts. The Academy for Health Professions carries out the theoretical training and is responsible for the organization of the training.

Our teachers, specialist lecturers and the practical instructors of the practical training accompany the trainees in large and small groups and individually. In addition to imparting specialist knowledge, self-directed and independent learning in self-study and project work is important to us. We make training requirements and assessment criteria transparent and provide teaching materials via our learning platform to ensure optimal use of the learning opportunities. We support the trainees in working on professional tasks independently, correctly and methodically. Our performance measurement concept gradually prepares trainees for the requirements of the final examination.

We ensure the quality of theoretical and practical training on the basis of the "Regulatory Agreement on Training Quality", which Heidelberg University Hospital has concluded. Trainees with a general higher education entrance qualification can study at the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University parallel to their training. "Interprofessional Healthcare (B.A.)" at the same time.

Theoretical training

The theoretical training comprises 2,100 hours. It takes place in block courses and on individual study days. The theoretical training is based on the federal framework curriculum in accordance with the Nursing Professions Act. We combine theoretical knowledge with practical training through practical exercises, practical assignments, problem-oriented learning and reflection on experienced nursing situations.

Practical training

The practical training, including the collectively agreed working hours, amounts to approx. 3,000 hours. The majority of the practical training takes place at the respective training provider, Heidelberg University Hospital or Salem Hospital. This also includes assignments at the Children's Hospital and the Psychiatric Clinic of Heidelberg University Hospital as well as at cooperating hospitals. In addition, 12 weeks of practical training are required in a nursing home and at an outpatient nursing service.

Practical instructors train the trainees on site in the clinics and facilities. The school supervises the trainees on site by providing regular practical support. At the Surgical Clinic of Heidelberg University Hospital, trainees are trained on HIPSTA - Heidelberg Interprofessional Training Ward are deployed.

Start of training, requirements, application

Training begins on April 1 and October 1 of each year. Prerequisites for admission to the apprenticeship are

  • Secondary school certificate or another equivalent or higher level of school education
  • Secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent school education, together with successfully completed vocational training with a planned training period of at least two years or completed training in nursing assistance or geriatric nursing assistance
  • For applicants who have obtained their school-leaving certificate abroad: Assessment of the school-leaving certificate by the Stuttgart Regional Council

If you are accepted for a training place, you must also provide the following evidence:

  • health suitability and proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox and pertussis (form will be sent with the acceptance letter)
  • Police clearance certificate

Training agreements

Trainees conclude their training contract with Heidelberg University Hospital or the Salem Hospital of the Evangelical City Mission Heidelberg. The training contract is based on the respective collective agreements.

The training allowance is (as of 01.05.2024):

  • Year of training: 1,517 euros
  • Year of training: 1,578 euros
  • Year of training: 1,674 euros

You will receive a company pension, capital-forming benefits, a special annual payment (Christmas bonus) and allowances for working on Sundays and public holidays during your practical training. In addition:

  • Costs covered for one family trip home per month
  • Germany ticket or MAXX ticket for local public transport
  • 30 days' vacation per year and 8 days off to prepare for final exams
  • Accommodation: Rooms of varying sizes and facilities are available in staff residences in Heidelberg-Neuenheim (Neuenheimer Feld campus) and Heidelberg-Schlierbach (Orthopaedic University Hospital).
