Interprofessional learning day on venous blood sampling - nursing and MTL trainees learn together

On June 6, 2025, trainee nurses worked together with medical technologists for laboratory analysis (MTL) on the topic of venous blood collection. The aim of the day was to deepen professional skills and gain insights into the working methods and perspectives of the other professional group.

After a theoretical introduction, the participants practiced venous blood collection in small groups - those who already had experience assisted with veins that were difficult to puncture. The nursing trainees then determined the blood group and glucose and coagulation values from their own sample under the guidance of their MTL colleagues.

The joint work not only promoted a practical understanding of their own actions, but also awakened respect for the tasks and skills of the other professional group. Many trainees were surprised - and positively impressed - by how much specialist knowledge and responsibility their colleagues have in their day-to-day work.

The conclusion of the day was consistently positive: The participants expressly wanted more interprofessional learning days like this. The day was an excellent example of how joint training units can promote mutual understanding and contribute to better cooperation in later professional life.
